Community with voice channels: Friendstime as a Discord alternative
If you know Discord, you are mainly looking for three things: a community with roles, voice channels to drop into and a chat that is always running. Friendstime offers this inside a social network from Germany. This page shows what to expect and where the differences are.
Community groups with roles
On Friendstime you start community groups that are public, closed or secret. In closed and secret groups only members see the posts. Admins manage members and approve join requests, moderators remove posts and comments. That gives your community a clear structure.
Voice channels to drop into
In every community group, owners and admins can create voice channels: with 2 to 50 seats and optional video, push-to-talk, a password and a minimum role that decides who may enter. The list shows who is in a channel right now. Channels exist in the browser and in the Android app.
Chat, polls and games
Every community group has its own group chat on the web and in the Android app. On top of that there are polls, files and an area for posts with comments. For smaller circles you create chat groups with up to 50 other people in the messenger and play small games there with Moments, such as tic-tac-toe or the emoji riddle.
Rooms and screen sharing
For spontaneous conversations without a group, the Android app has rooms with a voice and a text channel for up to 20 members, public or invite-only. In video calls you share your screen in the browser on a PC, and in the Android app in voice calls too.
What is different
Friendstime is a social network with a feed, profiles, pages and a marketplace, not a pure chat platform. There is no connection to Discord or other services; you reach other Friendstime members. Community group chats and voice channels are not end-to-end encrypted, and calls currently only in transit; what is end-to-end encrypted is the text of private chats and, under conditions, the text of chat groups in the messenger.
