Voice room
A voice room is a lasting meeting place online where people talk by voice and chat in text alongside – without anyone having to place a call.
What is a voice room?
A voice room is a meeting place on the internet that does not disappear after a conversation. Members join the voice channel whenever they like and talk with whoever is there at the moment – nobody has to call anyone. A room usually also has a text channel for links and short messages. Such rooms are known from gaming and community platforms; they work well for study groups, hobby circles or simply hanging out with friends.
Public or private
Anyone can find and enter a public room. Private rooms are meant for a fixed circle: only people who were invited can get in. Whoever creates a room is its owner and decides on its name and visibility; often the owner can also remove members again. In the voice channel you mute your microphone if you only want to listen, or you turn off the sound of the others if you need a moment of quiet.
What to watch out for
Whatever you say in the voice channel is heard by everyone who is in the room at that moment – in a public room this includes people you do not know personally. So do not share addresses, passwords or other private data there. Pay attention to your surroundings, because the microphone also picks up noises and conversations in the room you are in. If you feel uncomfortable, mute yourself or leave the room; nobody can keep you there.
At Friendstime
At Friendstime you find voice rooms in the Android app under “Rooms”. You create a room with a name, description, category, icon and colour and make it public or private; a room created in the app holds up to 20 members. Public rooms appear in the list for discovering. A private room can only be entered with an invitation: the owner invites friends, the invited person gets a notification and decides for themselves whether to join or decline; an invitation is valid for 30 days. Besides the voice channel, every room has a text channel. In the voice channel you can mute yourself or turn off the sound of the others. The voice connection runs over WebRTC, usually directly between the participants’ devices.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get into a private room?
Only with an invitation. At Friendstime the owner of the room invites friends. You then see the invitation in the room list and decide for yourself whether to accept or decline it.
Can everyone in the room hear me?
Yes, everyone who is in the voice channel at that moment hears you as long as your microphone is on. If you mute yourself, you no longer send any sound into the room, but you can still hear the others.
How is this different from a group call?
A group call starts when someone calls and ends when everyone has hung up. A voice room stays: members come and go whenever they like, and the messages in the text channel are kept.
