“On this day” (memories)
“On this day” is a look back: the network shows you your own earlier posts that match today's date and brings memories back.
What does “On this day” mean?
“On this day” – also called “Memories” or “A year ago today” – is a throwback feature of social networks. It shows you posts that you published on the same day or date in the past. Instead of paging through old entries, you come across photos and thoughts from back then on your own. A good throwback shows only your own content and does not push other people's posts to the front.
Why throwbacks are popular – and what they can stir up
Memories bring joy, show how things have changed and bring back people and places you had almost forgotten. They can also hurt, for example when they remind you of a breakup, a loss or a hard time. That is why it makes sense if single memories can be hidden and nobody is forced to share them.
What to keep in mind
An old post is not automatically a post for today. Before passing it on, check whether the content still fits: you may not want to show people in old photos, places or opinions from back then again. Also pay attention to who may see the post before you share it.
On Friendstime
On Friendstime the feature is called “On this day”; in the browser menu it appears as “Memories”, in the app as a card above the feed and as its own screen “On this day”. Only your own posts are shown, chosen purely by date – not by reactions. In the browser these are posts from the same day of the month in earlier months or years that are more than 25 days old; if there are none, Friendstime shows your very first post. In the app they are posts from today's date in earlier years, oldest first. There you can view, share or hide a memory; in the browser you can view it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Friendstime also show other people's posts?
No. On Friendstime “On this day” shows only your own earlier posts.
Can I hide a memory?
In the app, yes: a single memory can be hidden, and Friendstime remembers that. The page in the browser has no hide button.
What do I see if I haven't posted anything old yet?
Once you have been around for a while, your moments from earlier show up. In the browser Friendstime shows your very first post instead; in the app nothing appears.
