The time capsule: write today, open later
A letter to yourself in ten years, a message for your best friend’s 18th birthday or a greeting for an anniversary: with the time capsule you seal a message that Friendstime only opens on the chosen day. Here is how it works in the browser and in the app.
Creating a capsule
You find the time capsule in the browser menu and in the Android app. In the browser you write up to 5,000 characters, optionally attach a photo of up to 5 MB and choose an opening date at most 50 years in the future. For JPG, PNG and WebP, Friendstime removes the location and other image metadata.
For yourself or a friend
The recipient is you or a confirmed friend; capsules to strangers are not possible. Within 24 hours you can seal at most 10 capsules. The Android app creates capsules addressed to yourself, without a photo, and shows and opens capsules you receive.
Sealed until the day
Until the opening date, Friendstime does not deliver the content, not even to you as the sender. When it is sent, the recipient gets a notification without content: who a capsule is coming from and when it opens. The anticipation is part of the gift.
Cancel instead of peeking
If you change your mind, you can cancel a capsule that is still sealed in the browser. Reading it early is not possible, neither in the browser nor in the app. That is on purpose: a time capsule should only work its magic when its day has come.
How the capsule is stored
Time capsules are stored on the Friendstime server and are not end-to-end encrypted. Friendstime holds back the content until the opening date and does not show it before. So do not put anything in that you would not want to leave there, such as passwords or login details.

Only your confirmed friends. You get a notification without content saying that a capsule is on its way and when it opens.
How far into the future can it go?
The opening date can be at most 50 years in the future.
Is a time capsule encrypted?
Not end-to-end. It is stored on the server, and Friendstime holds back the content until the opening date.
