Write comments with an image or GIF
A comment does not have to be text only: you can attach a photo or pick a GIF from the search. This works below posts in the browser and in the Android app, including the comment panel of Reels.
Attach an image or GIF
In the browser, the comment field below each post has one button for an image and one for a GIF. In the Android app, tap the image or GIF icon next to the input field; a preview shows the attachment before you send, and each comment can carry one attachment. With an attachment, the text may stay empty.
Which images work
A comment image may be up to 5 MB and must be a JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP file. The Android app first scales photos down to at most 1600 pixels on the longer side and saves them again as JPEG. An animated GIF from the gallery is uploaded unchanged.
Location data is removed
When an image is uploaded, the server removes metadata such as the GPS position from JPG, PNG and WebP images. In the Android app, this information is already lost when the photo is saved again on the device.
Where the GIFs come from
The GIF search queries the library of the Tenor service through the Friendstime server. Only the address of the GIF is stored. It is displayed from the GIF service’s servers, so your browser or app loads it directly from there.
Reporting, and what comments are not
You report a comment with an image or GIF like any other, via “Report”; this button is also available on other people’s comments below blog articles. Comments and their images are stored readable on the server; they are not end-to-end encrypted.
