Fewer pings, more calm: notifications the way you like them

Notifications are useful until they get annoying. On Friendstime you decide per type whether you get a push notification, an email or nothing at all. Here is where to set this up, what the privacy option for emails does and how to quieten individual people.

Notifications by type

In the settings under notifications you find the table “Notifications by type”. For each type, such as new messages or friend requests, you decide in the push and email columns whether you get notified. These settings apply to web and app together.

Switch emails off or remove their content

With the switch “Emails about notifications” you turn off all notification emails; sign-in and security mail about your account still arrives. With “No content in emails”, an email names neither people nor the occasion, only that something is waiting. That helps when others can see your mailbox or lock screen.

Web push in the browser

Under web push notifications you enable notifications directly in the browser, even when Friendstime is not open. You set this up per device with “Enable on this device”, and “Show active devices” lists where web push is switched on. If the browser has blocked notifications, allow them in its settings first.

Quieten individual people

If you want peace from someone, choose “Mute” in the menu on their profile. You then no longer get push notifications or emails about their likes, comments and requests; chat messages from them are still notified. If you are mentioned in a muted chat group, the current Android app notifies you anyway.

How push is delivered

Push notifications are delivered by Google through its Firebase service. The security warning for a new device cannot be switched off, so that a stranger’s sign-in stands out. For calmer use, combine fewer notifications with the chronological feed.
