Adjust the display: contrast, text, motion and dark mode

Everyone reads differently: with small or large text, in daylight or late at night, with or without animations. Friendstime offers settings for this in the browser and in the Android app. Here is what exists and where to find it.

The accessibility settings

In the browser settings you find an accessibility tab with four switches: “High contrast” increases contrast for better readability, “Large text” enlarges the base font size by 25%, “Reading-friendly font” uses a typeface for people with reading difficulties and “Reduce motion” turns off transitions and animations. The switches apply in the browser where you set them. You can use them individually or combined, for example large text together with high contrast.

Dark mode in the browser

On the web you choose between a light, a dark and an automatic design. Friendstime stores your choice between light and dark in your account. You can also set an accent colour for your browser. The automatic design follows your device’s setting.

Design in the Android app

The Android app has design templates and a colour picker for your own accent colour. That way you set up the app the way it is comfortable for your eyes, for example dark in the evening.

Language and writing direction

The website interface is available in 74 languages. For Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Pashto and Hebrew it switches the writing direction to right-to-left. You choose the language in the settings; topic and glossary pages exist in many languages as versions of their own.

What is still in progress

According to its own statement, Friendstime is working on accessibility according to WCAG 2.2 AA, and the work is still ongoing. The full accessibility statement is openly available in the legal section. If you run into a barrier, report it so it can be fixed.
