Stories, view-once photos and live location: Friendstime as a Snapchat alternative

Snapchat stands for photos that disappear, stories for a day and quick chats with friends. On Friendstime you find counterparts to these features, in a social network from Germany. Here is what exists and where the limits honestly are.

View-once photos

In the Android app you send a photo as view-once in a private chat. The recipient can open it exactly once; when it is first viewed, the file is deleted from the server. While the photo is shown, the app blocks screenshots and screen recordings. It still cannot stop someone from photographing the screen with a second device. In the browser such a photo can be neither sent nor opened.

Stories for 24 hours

Stories stay visible for 24 hours and then expire automatically; you can delete them earlier at any time. Anything that should stay goes into a highlight. For a private chat you can also choose an expiry time of one hour, one day or one week; it currently does not apply to end-to-end encrypted text messages or to messages sent from the browser.

Live location with friends

In a private chat you share your location once or live: in the Android app for 15 minutes, one hour, six hours, one day or until you end it. Only you and the other person see a live location; only the latest point is stored, no history. It is end-to-end encrypted when both accounts have a key; otherwise it is stored readable on the server.

Chat and play

The text of private chats is end-to-end encrypted when both accounts have a key. With Moments you play small games in the chat, such as Match, Two truths one lie or tic-tac-toe, and count down together with the countdown. Photos and voice messages in one-to-one chats are end-to-end encrypted under the same condition; calls only in part.

Youth protection

You can join from age 13, under 16 with your parents’ consent. Fixed protective settings apply to teenagers under 18: the profile is private, and friend requests from and to teenagers are only possible through the personal invite link. Anyone who harasses you can be blocked and reported.
